GeorgiaCares warns Georgians about Spanish sweepstake scam
August 17, 2006 – The GeorgiaCares Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) project wants to warn Georgia’s seniors and others to be aware of the El Gordo Spanish Sweepstake lottery scam which claims that the recipient has won money in an international lottery. SMP, which is administered through the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Aging Services (DAS), is informing consumers that scammers are sending letters in an attempt to initiate a dialogue with potential victims and subsequently trick them into sending money.

GeorgiaCares reminds beneficiaries: Flu shots are covered by Medicare
December 19, 2006 -- GeorgiaCares SMP volunteers are reminding Medicare beneficiaries that they are not required to make a co-payment when receiving a flu shot because flu vaccinations are covered under Medicare. GeorgiaCares Senior Medicare Patrol warns seniors of collect call scams
November 20, 2006 -- The GeorgiaCares Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) is issuing a warning to seniors to beware of collect call scams. A report has come in from the Athens area regarding scammers making collect calls to seniors claiming they are from Medicare or the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

GeorgiaCares Senior Medicare Patrol Project reaches over 32,000
June 1, 2006 - A state program that educates seniors on detecting, preventing and reporting of health care errors, fraud and abuse, reached more than 32,000 people in state fiscal year 2005. The Department of Human Resources Division of Aging Services’ (DAS) GeorgiaCares Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) reached 32,113 people through health fairs, presentations and other educational outreach events.

GeorgiaCares Program helps Medicare beneficiaries understand Part D Drug Plan Options for 2007
November 14, 2006 – Medicare beneficiaries can change or renew their Medicare Part D Drug Plan Options for 2007 starting in November and the GeorgiaCares program is offering to help. The Medicare Open Enrollment period begins November 15, 2006 and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Aging Services’ (DAS) GeorgiaCares program are advising people who wish to make a change to do so by December 8 to ensure that their coverage will be available on January 1, 2007.

September 27, 2006 – Public hearings to get consumer input for the Division of Aging Services (DAS) 2007 State Plan renewal will be held statewide from October 10 to November 16, 2006. Public hearings are scheduled in Gainesville, Newnan, Dallas, Warner Robbins, Dublin, Brunswick, Waycross, Albany, Atlanta, Thomson, Covington, and Columbus.

June 9, 2006 - The first annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be celebrated around the globe June 15, 2006 to recognize elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. The Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Aging Services (DAS) will join other states, countries and the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) in recognizing, honoring and raising awareness of persons 65 and older who suffer in silence because of abuse, neglect or exploitation.

May 24, 2006 - The Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Aging Services (DAS) and Division of Public Health (DPH) are announcing the launch of the Georgia Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (GSFMNP) which will take place June 1 – August 31, 2006 in five selected areas of the state. The program’s goal is to improve access to and increase consumption of fruits and vegetables while providing nutrition education, including health benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables, healthy meal plans, recipes, cooking, freezing, canning demonstrations and more.

DHR’s Division of Aging Services operates the Georgia-Cares Lifelong Planning Program, a public-private partnership that helps consumers plan for their long-term care future.

June 13, 2006 - Each year, many at-risk Georgians find themselves in situations where they are in need of a guardian but don’t have a family member, friend or another person who is willing or able to act as their guardian. The Georgia General Assembly amended Georgia law last year to create public guardians to fill this need.
